A lot of people have speculated that the league might be coming to an end. First of all, I want to tell you that those rumors are not true, but they also aren’t outright false either. Let’s face it; the last two seasons have been an absolute drag. Activity – depth charts, SI Cup ballots, trades, etc. – is down, depth chart errors are up, and overall it just feels like people are having less fun lately. On top of all that, we have more vacancies right now than we’ve ever had at any one point in the league.
Part of this is my fault. I was largely checked out for the majority of this past season for a multitude of reasons and did nothing to try and stop the league from collapsing other than the standard day-to-day work I usually do as commissioner. As a last ditch effort to try and reinvigorate my own interest, I tried to trade for my favorite player, but was denied for whatever reason. I truly thought that was the straw that would break the camel’s back in terms of me ever wanting to run this or any league ever again. Ask TYO or Sheldon, they saw firsthand me saying I was done.
Oddly enough, my team’s improbable run to a fifth championship and the revenge I got on the GM who denied me my favourite player rejuvenated me to the point where I’m willing to keep this thing going, but I can’t do it alone. First and foremost, we need to fill the league again. Don’t sit back and think “oh, somebody else will find a GM”… go recruit. Whether it be familiar faces or new blood, we need bodies, and not just people who are going to sit on a team and not do anything year after year.
Secondly and most important, we need to get back to making this league fun for everybody. If we do end up pushing forward into the 2010 season and it’s just a repeat of 2008 and 2009, I can assure you we’ll be going through this same exact thing next off-season. I don’t think anybody wants that to happen, so let’s all make an effort to get this thing back on track. If you have any suggestions for ways to improve the league, I’m all ears as always.
