If you feel ready to commit to a player for the foreseeable future and get a jump start on the other teams who can offer in free agency, you can offer them a contract extension. The rules for the extensions you can offer differ depending on the player, which will be broken down below:
Rookie Scale Contract
- Max Years: 4 if offering less than a full max contract, 5 if offering a FULL max contract (with 8% raises)
- Max Salary: Maximum Contract
- Max Increase: 8%
- When It Can Be Offered: Off-season one year before restricted free agency after team option has been extended
All Other Contracts
- Max Years: 5 minus # of years remaining on contract
- Max Salary: Either 120% of final year of current salary or Maximum Contract, whichever is smaller
- Max Increase: 8%
- When It Can Be Offered: With two years or less remaining on contract, starting after the two-year anniversary after previous contract was signed, up until trade deadline of final season in contract. If the player has more two years remaining on the contract, he can only extend during the off-season.
Note: If a player is extended in the off-season, he cannot be traded until the All-Star break of the upcoming season. If the player is extended during the season (after training camp), he cannot be traded until the following off-season.
If you want to offer your player an extension, please post a topic with the player's name in the topic title. Inside the topic, please outline exactly what the offer is. If you want to add a reason as to why you think the player should accept your offer, you can. From there, the negotiation will begin.
