Those of you who have been in my leagues before know I like to do things differently than most other commissioners. Thinking outside the box and innovating is something I thrive on. Improving on what I don't like from other leagues, including my own, is a big part of why I like running these things. In the months since TSFBL I, I had a lot of time to think about that. I soon realized one of my biggest pet peeves about running leagues is creating 70-80 players in a given draft class, and only 40 of them even making it past their rookie season before being sent to the FBB graveyard. How could I make it so every prospect mattered? After days of thinking and a handful of ideas bounced off of entrusted confidants, the answer was simple: the only way every prospect in a draft class is going to be given a true chance in the league is if they're better than the players currently in the league right away.
But how do you implement that? Well, you can take a look at the index for a better idea, but the concept is that we aren't "starting" a league at all here, but rather continuing one. In short, I created a fictional base file, and the players fucking suck. With hindsight, I might've made them a bit better, but I digress -- they'll be out of the league in a few seasons anyways. From there, I simulated six years and imported the 1991-1995 draft prospects that were unveiled a few weeks ago. You might ask, why did you not make more prospects for those years? Well, I asked everybody if they wanted to see more players from these years, and nobody gave me a single name, so what you saw is what you got.
So, yes, the index on the site right now is what we're going with. The 1995 season was just concluded, and Shaquille O'Neal won his first championship with the New Jersey Nets. Yes, the real players' stats are inflated as hell -- this will calm down over time as more competent players come into the league. With the team draft, you'll have a decision to make. Do you want to take a team like the Nets or KG's Clippers and try to contend right away? Do you want to take one of the worst records in the league and pray to the lottery gods for Kobe Bryant? (NOTE: This draft is taking place BEFORE the 1996 Draft Lottery occurs) Or do you want to try and find the middle ground? Or maybe you don't even care who's on the roster and just want to pick a team for the name brand. Some teams have three real players, some teams have none, but they're all an interesting choice and you'll have to decide how you want to play it.
I understand this might not be the most popular way to start a league, but I urge you to give it a chance. After the 1996 Rookie Draft, almost 150 real players will be in the league. By the 1998 Rookie Draft, this number will be doubled. By the 2000 Rookie Draft, the league should be all real players, just as it should be.
As for the team draft, ping pong balls were given to all 29 of the GM's who signed up for the league. If you were a new GM, you were given a 1/29 chance of receiving the #1 overall pick, the same you would have gotten if it were completely balanced. If you were a previous GM from TSFBL I, your ping pong balls were decided based on the number of error-free depth charts you submitted over the course of last league. From there, GM's were given extra ping pong balls if they referred other GM's to this league, and were also given a few extras if they griped the draft files I've posted so far. You'll hear me say often that "a league has to be self-sustaining" -- this is the first example, of hopefully many to come, of me rewarding the people who are keeping it going. But at the end of the day, it's still random.
The draft will begin now. You have 24 hours to pick a team, and all picks are final. I assume most of you will take far less time than this, but there's really no rush as I'm going to be in Europe until next weekend, and the league isn't moving forward until then. The 1996 Draft File also needs to be griped more than it has so far before we move on. If you don't pick within the 24-hour time limit, you're going to be moved to the back of the line. If you miss your pick a second time, you'll lose your spot in the league. This thread is for picks only, and picking your team will double as checking in. Good luck to everybody involved, and without further ado, the order:
