To Mr. Houston,
We here in the Minnesota Timberwolves Ownership Group have been eyeing you and you career for several years now -- and we pounced at the first opportunity it appeared the Washington franchise was looking in other directions. We understand you have big decisions to make regarding your basketball future, and we'd like to present an opportunity to you here.
When you hit Unrestricted Free Agency this offseason, my guess is that every team will be flocking to your door on Day 1 offering a maximum contract, which for them projects out to be $51,949,590 over four years. Its absolutely a ton of money, and a very good "last big contract" -- but there is a huge catch, and you are one of very few who are penalized by it.
Our league insiders predict that the cap next year will drop by over $2.2M from this year, but then rise over $3.5M the following year. Your contract is within a salary cap cavity, and not to mention you are currently playing in your 9th season in TSFBL. That entitles you to 30% of the salary cap as your maximum salary, which for next year is projected as $12,081,300. After you've played 10 seasons in the league, you're entitled to 35% of the salary cap, which I mentioned earlier is going to be $3.5M more that following season.
The official offer that the Minnesota Timberwolves franchise is extending is a one year at our maximum 120% raise of $10,652,400.
After playing one more season here in Minnesota, you would be eligible to sign a five year, $88,995,200 with us -- and if you want to then leave that's okay as well. Your max contract elsewhere would be $65,979,200 over four years, with Year 1 starting at $15,344,000. In the next two seasons, you'll have been paid $25,996,400 with our extension and then entering FA optimally, compared to $24,162,600 by opting out in the market crash.
Once your contract ends with us, the league's Players Association will likely advocate to "take the $52M over $10M". They would reject it even if I put in a 1 year $12M offer in the offseason, which I unfortunately cannot do now. What they won't see is the man, efficient as ever, eyeing his last big pay day and seeing up to $37M more just by waiting out one year more. Once you hit unrestricted free agency this offseason, that money is gone.
Mr. Houston, again I understand this is a challenging decision to make -- and if you turn this down it is okay. We are looking forward to having you and Stackhouse lead us on a great second half of the season, regardless of this extension's standing. I just wanted to let you know that we believe it is in your best interest to sign a 1 year deal, so you can maximize your Free Agency in 2003 and not in 2002.
