Wizards offer 4 years, max starting salary, 5% annual raises. Thank you for your offer. Since you're willing to offer a maximum contract, I'm a little confused why you wouldn't just give him the full 5 years and 8% raises. Is this something you're open to?

We love Tony and everything we have seen from him so far but want to see just a bit more production before we commit to a true max contract with max annual raises.
The offered contract would be a large step up from a rookie contract and would be equal to anything Tony could procure from the open market. While also offering a bit of a home-town discount to the club compared to a true max contract. This flexibility would be valuable when it comes to continuing to build a true winner around Tony Parker. Therefore we feel it is an excellent compromise and the best of both worlds.
A true max is something we would think about, and may offer next off-season. But at this time we feel the offered contract is the best option for all involved.

I understand your point, but, unfortunately, restricted free agency is not a time for finding the best option for all parties, it's about the player securing the biggest pay-day possible. If you aren't willing to go to the full max contract on this extension -- for a guy you drafted #1 overall, no less -- than there's no point in continuing the discussion any further and we can pick it up in the off-season. Up to you.

I would say unrestricted free agency is about finding the biggest pay day possible.
And restricted free agency is about allowing teams to keep their drafted and developed stars at a rate that makes sense for everyone.
However, the point about Mr. Parker being drafted #1 overall is a good point. I think the question is whether Mr. Parker will develop into the kind of #1 overall pick teams brag about, or not. But at this time risking unrestricted free agency isn’t something the Wizards want to do. Therefore the Wizards are prepared to offer the following:
5 Year Contract Maximum starting salary 8% annual raises
