Sometimes players and teams mutually agree to divorce each other. This is referred to as a buyout. The difference between a buyout and simply waiving a player is that you can potentially save yourself some money.
If you want to enter buyout negotiations with a player, you can post a thread with the player's name and (Buyout) in the thread title. In the thread, you will begin negotiations on the amount the player will give back in his contract in exchange for his freedom to sign with another team. Please note that it's very rare that a player would give back more than what they'd earn on their next contract, as they'd lose money otherwise.
Once the buyout is agreed to, the decision is final. The team will waive the player, and the player goes through waivers as normal. If the player clears waivers, the player's guaranteed salary will be reduced or eliminated based on what was agreed to.
After a buyout in which the player's guaranteed salary is reduced, the team cannot re-sign the player or claim him of waivers for one full season, or until the waived contract would have ended, whichever is later.
Any guaranteed salary still owed to the player as the result of a buyout continues to be included in team salary, just as with any waived player.
Commissioner Advice: If a player wants a buyout either to land on a contender or to play a bigger role elsewhere, it's good practice to go along with it. In the case of the former, cutting the player probably makes your team worse if your goal to tank, and if it's the latter, granting the player freedom will elevate your standing with the FBB Agent.
